Dr. Harry Voesten, His love of Horses

His horse addiction started as he presented his wife a race horse for her birthday in 1989 (in front of their sixteen century house right in the middle  of Groningen city with its 175,000 inhabitants.)

After 10 years breeding race horses he switched to Friesians, a type of horse much more suited for a family with two girls of 6 and 9.

As computeranalysis of pedigree is very sophisticated in thoroughbreds and nonexistent in Friesians he started deleting 550,000 racehorses out of their pedigree program and put in all Friesian stallions from no 1 to 406 and all friesian mares he came across. This allows very accurate comparison of pedigree in terms of where are the superior horses in that particular pedigree. Tail female or tail male lines are no problem. Using computer pedigree research it appears that selective inbreeding to superior females could have much more impact to get good quality stock than mere inbreeding to stallions.

As there are not that many English papers on friesian matter he tries to translate important issues on Friesian horses into English as he follows courses at the Friesch Paarden Centrum.
Another very interesting topic is introducing human surgical procedures into equine surgery. In 2000 Dr Voesten (in collaboration with a vet surgeon group) performed the first veinaccessport implant in a famous jumping stallion with congestive heart disease.

Dr. Harry Voesten, Student

Living 1 mile from Fries Paarden Centrum it was very easy to attend courses like Friese paarden beoordelen I (by Siebren Minkema), Friese paarden beoordelen II (by Harry Draaijer) and Preparing for Keuring (Sybren Minkema).
